Holiness – A Call to be Like God

Ephesians 4:1 - Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God. (NLT)

1 Thessalonians 4:7 - God has called us to live holy lives, not impure lives.  (NLT)

2 Timothy 1:9 - For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus. (NLT)

1 Peter 1:15 -16 - But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.” (NLT)

Devotional Series: Calling

Holiness is a calling. It is a calling to be better, to be more like God. But it is a calling that so many of us either forget, ignore or belittle.  By belittle here, I don’t mean make fun of, I mean minimise and make  smaller than it ought to be.

In today’s devotional, I have chosen to use four verses, on purpose, to emphasize the importance of the call to holiness and the significance placed on it in the New Testament. As representatives of God’s kingdom, it is critical that each of us respond to this call immediately. Not because we are bound to the Law or any rules or regulations. But so that, we can accurately reflect God’s character and be better witnesses to the world.  Our actions need to line up with our words and what the Bible actually says about morality.

The world is tired of leaders who lack moral character. It is looking for people like us to stand up and live differently. The world is looking for leaders who are easy to follow. The world (and the Church) needs leaders who don’t just look like they live holy lives but really live holy lives.

Our callings are not just about doing (ministry, business, service) but also about being. We are called to live lives that are worthy of our calling and to be holy just as He is holy!

Ephesians 4:1 - Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God. (NLT)

1 Peter 1:15 -16 - But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.” (NLT)

Questions for reflection: Am I living a life worthy of my calling? Have I asked the Holy Spirit to help me live a life of holiness? Does my leadership reflect the character of God?
