The Habit Above All Habits….

Joshua 1:8 - Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. (NLT)

Psalm 119:130 - The teaching of your word gives light, so even the simple can understand. (NLT)

John 1:1 - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (NIV)

It’s still January. I think we are allowed to continue talking about new beginnings, new seasons, new habits, the new you etc, etc. But if you are reading this then, what I want to share with you isn’t really new. It’s just a reminder. It’s a reminder to start, maintain or increase in your intensity of the best habit any of us could ever take up. It’s a call to remember to pick up your Bible and read it every day.

If you are reading this email, I am hoping that you haven’t skipped over today’s Bible passages a headed to my commentary. If you have, can I gently nudge you to stop reading my words and read the words of the Bible?  Here they are again just for you:

Joshua 1:8 - Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. (NLT)

Psalm 119:130 - The teaching of your word gives light, so even the simple can understand. (NLT)

John 1:1 - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (NIV)

Why? Because, it is the words of the Bible that bring life, success, peace and prosperity. But you probably already know this. All I am doing is giving you a gentle reminder.  I once heard a preacher say that knowledge becomes wisdom when it is acted upon. Let’s turn our knowledge into wisdom!

Perhaps you are already wise and have been starting your day with your quiet time. Fantastic! Maybe the Lord is encouraging you to go deeper in his word this year. Why not try reading his word in the morning and the evening or five minutes of additional Bible reading during your lunch break? Or maybe you can set aside some time at the weekend to do a deeper Bible study? Another option is to commit to learning a simple verse every day, week or month.

Wherever you are in your walk with the Lord, we all need to spend more time in the word. Not only for its benefits but also to encounter his tangible presence before we face the challenges of the day ahead.

Question for reflection: What one thing can I do today to kickstart, maintain or improve my daily Bible reading habit/s?
